Need Help?
Where do we begin?
To prepare students and parents for this journey, our first job is to review the map with everyone. We discuss all activities, assignments and expectations at the beginning of the process. Clear communication is key to success.
How do I know what school(s) are right for me?
There are so many factors to consider, and every student is unique. We develop a comprehensive list of potential colleges based on factors like current academics, programs of study, extensive discussion and assessment, along with our experience and research. It takes time, but it’s worth it!
How many colleges should I apply to?
There are no target numbers, but our average student applies to 6 to 12 schools. Having options is important.
I already have colleges sending me emails and brochures in the mail. Does that mean they’ll accept me if I apply?
In what grade should students and their parents start thinking about the college process?
What is the first question college admissions representatives ask you about the students you advise?
“Has the student maximized their high school experience?” This is an important reason to work with Perkins & Murphy early in the college process. We address high school classes, activities, community service, and employment—the complete applicant.
A strong college applicant is not just a smart student with good grades. They are also a good citizen.
I am interested in having Perkins & Murphy help me through the college process, but I have more questions…
My SAT scores are not very good. Does that mean I can’t go to college?
SAT scores can be an important part of your application, but they’re not the only part. There are other ways to measure academic achievement, and SAT’s can be re-taken after completing preparation programs. Students with lower scores have options, and that’s where Perkins & Murphy can help. We’ll work with you to identify those options. (And don’t forget the ACT!)
My parents say they make too much money to qualify for financial aid. Should we skip the FAFSA and the CSS/Profile?
Probably not! That could be a big mistake. Paying for college is often the parents’ biggest concern during the entire process. We make this information understandable and provide as much guidance as you need. Everyone’s situation is different, so let’s talk about this.

This is why we do what we do...
We both would like to thank you so much for all your incredible time, care, and patience for the past 2+ years! We have NO DOUBT that hiring you two to coach our daughter was the BEST THING EVER. No way would college apps and planning be done without you.
My time with you guys has gone by so fast! But I just wanted to say thank you so, so, so, so much for every bit of guidance, counseling, editing, and talking me through the process. I wouldn’t have had such success and easy journey without you guys.
You both have been amazing to work with and I’m so sad to be finished for now but will definitely keep in touch!
Thank you both for truly lighting the way on this most important journey in our lives. We have all learned so much and felt secure in your capable, knowledgeable hands. Thanks for always giving your all. Go Syracuse!
Thank you so much for all you guys have helped me with over the past few years. I could not have done it without your constant support and guidance.
I wanted to thank you guys for all that you have done to get me to where I am now. It really is incredible that you help out so many students in such an in-depth way, and deal with the uniqueness of each student’s situation. I’m really looking forward to school at the University of Vermont, and I owe you guys all the credit in the world.
With both of us working full time, we wanted to make sure that our inexperience with the college application process didn't affect our son's goals. Perkins and Murphy have far exceeded our expectations. From helping to find schools that matched our son's interests, resume building, essay tutorials, application submittal, scholarship searches, and financial counseling, they have been so knowledgeable and professional! Our son was accepted to his first-choice school! Now, it's our daughter's turn!
